Assurance for jobs is on the cards to lakhs of unemployed in the country. Indian Railway is preparing a scheme for providing job opportunities to all those, who study in the China-model Railway University with high educational standards. Central Government has given green signal to this proposal. China has come forward to extend all technical support for this proposition. Railway authorities have informed that necessary arrangements are being made for admissions into this Institute from the next academic year itself. Department of Railways is thinking for providing one to two lakhs of jobs in railways to those, who study in this Institute.
Indian Railways have been creating new records year after year in transport of goods and travellers. There are a total of 16 lakh posts in all the 17 Railway Zones in the country. Even though there are a good number of vacancies accumulated during the past many years, they still remain vacant, resulting in drop of the number of railway employees to 13 lakhs. Presently vacancies in railways are being filled up through Railway Recruitment Boards and Railway Recruitment Cells in Indian Railway. They are absorbing the selected candidates after giving the necessary training for some months to them. Imparting training has become a financial burden to the Railways and since the present Railway Staff do not have the necessary technical knowledge, the Railways are facing a lot of problems. To overcome these difficulties and problems, the Railway Board has taken a decision to absorb the candidates only after giving intensive training in the relevant fields and brought it to the notice of the Central Government. The matter was studied in-depth and it was thought that it would be appropriate to start a Railway University for giving good quality technical training with Degree and PG level courses. This was announced by the Railway Minister Sadananda Gouda during the recent Railway Budget presentation.
Similar to China Model Railway University
Human Resource Development Ministry has evolved an action plan for creation of Railway University and entrusted the matter to “Educational Consulting India Limited’ for a report with the modalities for starting this University and a MoU was also entered into with them. Simultaneously, consultations with Chinese officials were also taken up. There was a special University for Railways here in Chine since the last many years and they have agreed to extend their co-operation in the matter. Railway authorities have decided to take the advice and assistance of IIT, Khargapur in the engineering and design areas of the courses. It is understood that only technical and non-technical course will be started and the Railway authorities say that employment will be provided to one to two lakhs of students, who successfully complete their courses in this Institution. Clarity is expected to be available relating to the location of the University and its affiliated Colleges within the next 2 to 3 months.
While it is said that India generated employment with 1/6 of the labour force of the entire world, Railways alone have employed 1/6 of the labour force of Central Government departments. It is laudable that after a deep slumber for many years, the Railways have now realised their role in providing employment opportunities in India and conceived this novel idea. It is now for you to avail this opportunity to your advantage.
