Railway Job opportunities are available to candidates with qualifications varying from Matric to PG and with specialization in the relevant field. Indian Railway jobs are classified into Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D posts.

Railway Recruitment of Group A jobs in Administrative Services, Engineering Service and Medical Service will be taken up by the Union Public Service Commission through competitive examinations and interviews. Group Brailway jobs are not entry level posts. They are not directly recruited by the railways.  It is a promotion channel to on-deputation employees in Group C. For example, up-gradation to Section Officers grade from Group C posts in Indian Railway.

Indian Railway Recruitment to Group C and Group Djobs will be taken up by the respective Railway Recruitment Boards. Group C posts consist of Technical and Non-Technical cadres like Clerk, Station Master, Ticket Collector, Commercial and Traffic Apprentices and some posts in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Signal & Communication departments.  They are filled through Competitive Tests/ Interviews.

Indian Railway Recruitment Cells, in parallel with Railway Recruitment Boards under the Railway Recruitment Central Board are entrusted with the work relating to recruitment of Group D posts such as Trackman, Porter, Hamal, Khalasi, Assistant Pointsman and Safaiwala.

Chandigarh, Jammu, Malda, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Ranchi, Siliguri, Trivendrum, Mumbai, Secunderabad, Guwahati,  Bhubaneswar, Allahabad, Bilaspur, Chennai, Gorakhpur and Kolkata, in its 17 Zones, under the control and direction of Railway Recruitment Central Board, as their apex body. Apart from the recruitments for Railways, their recruitment functions are even extended to the Institutions/ Organisations affiliated to the Indian Railways 10 production and manufacturing units, 7 Educational and Research Centres and 2 Heritage Centres in the Country.
